EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)
OR PRIMARY CARE PARAMEDIC (PCP) 
This programme is designed for health care professionals in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) industry to adequately assess and treat sick and injured patients at a Basic Life Support (BLS) level. The programme includes a 12-week didactic/lab study plus hospital, interhospital and ambulance practicum which are assessed and monitored according to national standards using the National Occupational Competencies (NOCP). A research programme is also delivered within this course.
The curriculum includes the following certification upon successful completion of the programme:
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate
- Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certificate
- Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) certificate
- Emergency Paediatric Care (EPC) certificate
- NAPD Emergency Vehicle Operations certificate (weather and time permitting)
- Symptom Relief Programme for EMT (Primary Care Paramedics)
- 12-1 Education (Includes: MAST/PASG, entonox administration, IV therapy, cardiac monitoring and D50W)

All EMT final scenarios will be administered by STARS in their mobile simulation unit. This is far above educational requirements and is an amazing opportunity for our students to build skills and confidence.
Admission:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Completed CCEMS Application Form
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (Photocopy)
- High School and/or Post Secondary Transcripts (Photocopy)
- EMR Certificate with Transcripts (Photocopy)
- *Current EMR - ACP Registration Card (Photocopy)
- Current criminal record check
- Hand written letter stating why you want to take the programme
- *Class 4 driver's license

All persons applying for the EMT program will be required to complete an interview with the EMT Program Coordinator or designate and may be asked to demonstrate a number of skills within the EMR scope of practice prior to acceptance into the program. This interview may also include a short written exam. |
*Students accepted into the EMT programme must be registered EMRs in good standing with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) prior to placement on clinical rotations (Ambulance and hospital). Failure to comply with this stipulation will result in a delay of your placement, and may result in a suspension or removal from the programme. *Class 4 license is preferable, but is not mandatory. Class 5 license will suffice.
Mature Student Status
- A mature student is considered to be any applicant of the EMT Programme who is 21 years or older and does not meet all the minimum prerequisites. The high school diploma will be waived In lieu of a GED and/or post secondary education.

- Mantoux: (TB test)-a baseline 1-step test or a test in the last 6 months
- *Hepatitis B: Series of 3 injections at 0 month, 1 month and 6 months and antibody testing 2-3 months post 3rd injection
- Tetanus/Diphtheria: booster every ten years
- MMR(measles, mumps, rubella): Childhood series and a second injection for measles
*Must have at least 2 out of 3 vaccinations prior to going on practicum. Cost
- Tuition is $4,500.00 plus GST
- Mandatory fees are $2,000.00 plus GST. These fees cover the costs of labs, research initiatives, WCB and malpractice insurance, self-defense training, online course components, and practicum placements for the hospital and ambulance rotations. This fee does NOT include extra costs associated with travel, meals, or lodging while the student is class or on practicum.
- Students are responsible for purchasing their own course textbooks and uniforms. Please contact CCEMS with any inquiries regarding uniform policies.
- NEW: Textbook requirements will be given to each student after they have been accepted.

Programme Orientation
There may be a group orientation offered approximately two weeks prior to the beginning of each class. The orientation gives the faculty an opportunity to present a concise overview of the programme to all potential EMT candidates. Not only is this an opportunity for College officials to discuss policies and procedures, it is a valuable opportunity for all potential students to discuss their objectives in an environment consisting of their peers and future instructors.
